Does working in your pajamas, avoiding the madness of the morning commute and answering emails from the comfort of your bed, or in an exotic country perhaps whilst sitting in a hammock and sipping a cocktail sound like something you would be interested in?
Well, it should! These things are not just rumours, they are truths and they are the reality for a number of remote workers around the world. It may just surprise you about what remote working is like, and how different your life can be when you don’t have to go to an office every single day.
Let’s look at some ways working from home or remotely is different to a normal working environment.
Your office can be anywhere
As someone who ‘works from home’, you are not actually tied to your home. You can focus on your job literally anywhere you are in the world; you can quite easily take care of your work commitments whilst travelling in far and exotic places. Thanks to your laptop’s battery life and the ability to tether your laptop to your phone for mobile data, you can literally work from anywhere in the world.
You save money
When you take the plunge and begin working for yourself, you will begin to save money. When you do not need to spend money on commuting, you will save so much money which you can invest into other things such as travelling. You no longer need to buy expensive suits and clothes, for example, too.
You can become more independent
Because you are not tied to an office desk surrounded by colleagues and co-workers, you will begin to notice that you develop interpersonal skills and become more proactive to solve problems. Because you don’t have a tech team at your beck and call, for example, you will begin to learn how to solve common computer problems. Also, you will end up with some skills which you need to work remotely. For example, your emails will become a lot more fluid, clear and concise, because you write them more often.
You will stay motivated and focussed
Remote working does require some self-discipline and willpower, but you will soon adopt a steady routine and begin to learn how not to become distracted by household chores or the TV. In fact, when you work remotely, you will find that you get much more done around the house, because you control your own life so much more. You do not need to worry about when you will have chance to fit the laundry in or cook dinner, because you can do it on your own time when it suits you.
You don’t even need an office
Just because you are working from home, that does not mean that you need an office. Your living room doesn’t need to be filled with a huge desk and a rolling chair; you can fit your office wherever it suits you and fits in your life. Some people use their kitchen breakfast bars or dinner tables as desks, whereas others like to work from bed! The choice is yours.
You will have a better quality of life
When you are not stuffed in an office and tied to a desk for 40 hours a week, your overall quality of life will improve drastically. Not just because you get to do whatever you want, when you want, but because you will achieve an overall improved work-life balance where you are not obligated to have everything done by 5pm.
Working from home or working remotely is a great thing to do, if you can. I would encourage everybody to at least spend some portion of their lives working for themselves, from home or from overseas, and enjoy your life, rather than selling your soul to an office environment in return for a salary.
