There is simply no doubt that working and earning from home is the best job in the world; it gives you the freedom to decide your own working hours and be your own boss. However, not all is ideal; there is one major pitfall; being your own boss can get you distracted and take your focus away; you can very easily get caught up in your daily household chores, get busy with your friends and family or even yourself an extension on deadlines. These distractions have an adverse effect on your outcome and productivity.
Fortunately, with self-control and commitment you can manage your time well and stop yourself from getting distracted; this will help you focus on your work and be more productive.
Here are 5 golden tips for home-based freelancers to increase productivity.
No social media while working
Whenever we pick up our laptops or cell phones, the first thing most of us do is check our social media accounts. Even while working we cannot help checking our Facebook or Instagram every five minutes; this not only takes your focus away but also wastes time. Social media may be one of the biggest reasons why we miss deadlines and deliver weak results.
To counter this problem you will need commitment and self-control. You should log out of all your social media accounts at least 15 minutes before you start working. It may be difficult in the beginning but once you get involved with your work and ideas start flowing, you may not want to break the rhythm and your focus.
No more procrastination
When you set a milestone for the day you must achieve it.
When we have a slightly flexible deadline we can easily fall victim to procrastination. This means the milestone that needed to be achieved today will be achieved tomorrow along with tomorrow’s target. So not only do you waste an entire day, you also increase your workload for the next.
What happens tomorrow then? In a hurry to achieve both milestones, you may intentionally or unintentionally compromise the quality and eventually the outcome. This means you will not get the results you wanted and your productivity will not be what you expected.
Therefore, do not put off until tomorrow what you must do today.
Give yourself a little break
Yes, it sounds ideal to just sit down and get the job done but the truth is after a while your brain will become tired. When the mind is tired, the creative juices do not flow as smoothly as you would want. You will not be able to give your best and your productivity will go down.
After every 45 minutes or an hour, you must get up to stretch your legs, give your mind a break and eyes a rest. However, be careful because you do not want to spend more than 10-12 minutes on each break otherwise your break time will add up to increase your burden and lower your productivity.
No friends and family during working hours
When you are at home your friends and family may feel they can drop by any time or discuss their every-day problems; you must not allow this. In order to make sure you do not get distracted you should tell your friends and family not to disturb you during your working hours. Even if the meeting is for five minutes, it will be enough to break your concentration and take your focus away from your work.
Set up a separate work station
It is important to have a separate workspace when you are working from home. The home office or workstation should not be a place to keep your laundry, eat food or store your kids’ toys; it needs to be just dedicated to your office related items and files. This means, when you are working, no one can enter that space or use it for any other purpose, which will not cause any distractions.
These tips will help you stay focused on your work and that will help you do better, which is what you need be more productive.
