There is nothing better to earn money while sitting in the comfort of your home. Not having to go to an office certainly makes you your own boss. However one of the biggest misconceptions about working from home is that we assume there are no rules! This could not be farther from the truth.
When you are in an office you are under constant supervision which helps you maintain focus and leads to a more productive outcome. The situation is quite different when you work from home; we are more relaxed and since we do not report to anyone, we can develop habits and routines that can adversely affect our results. The real problem is that we fail to understand the fact that there are Dos and Don’ts even when you work from home.
You must have read many articles on how to be more productive while working from home but this one will tell you what you must NOT do.
Do NOT work without a schedule
Yes, this is very important! You must have a schedule even as a freelancer. You need to allocate time slots to your work and personal life. Once you know there is a schedule to be followed, you will be more focused and dedicated to your work. You must be thinking then where is the freedom of working from home? You do not have to follow someone else’s schedule; you have the freedom to decide your own; select the time that suits you; give yourself the number of hours you can manage but once you do you must commit to it.
You must NOT let friends or family distract you
You may think that you could just sit down anywhere to work; the truth is, you cannot because you need peace and quiet. You must not allow yourself to be distracted by your friends or family members otherwise your concentration will be affected and consequently your outcome. Select a place where you can be alone. Have a special work corner or home office.
You must NOT miss deadlines
Yes, you are your own boss but you still cannot miss deadlines. If you started to take deadlines for granted the work will start to pile up and every job will become a rushed one, which will lead to poor results. When you set a deadline for yourself, you must meet it.
You must NOT use gadgets or watch TV during working hours
Many freelancers fall victim to their gadgets and TV. You must feel that having the freedom to use gadgets and watch TV is a huge perk for freelancers but it is one of the biggest reasons for failing. These things not only waste time but also do not let you concentrate on your work.
You must NOT use your personal email for work
It is important to keep separate emails for your work and personal use. This allows you to keep a traceable and an organized record of your communication with clients. Moreover it adds the touch of professionalism that is so easy to lose when you are working from home.
Do NOT start a project without finalizing payment
As a freelancer you may think that it is alright for you to start working first and discuss the issue of payment later; this is not the case. You should discuss all the terms and conditions before starting the project. If you are working online and your client is from another country, you should be very clear about how and using which medium the payment will be processed.
If possible take a small upfront payment to protect yourself against fraudulent clients. You must also maintain a record of all payment invoices, receipts and agreements.
These are just some of the tips that can help you be more organized and productive while working from home. Remember, no matter where you are, work needs commitment and discipline otherwise your outcome will suffer.
